The making of…

Designer Stan Jarin says:
This book was produced using Midjourney AI as a tool. I wanted to do something I hadn’t seen before: AI used as an instrument to precisely execute a human vision and design, with human warmth and emotion.
I started from a zero knowledge base.
I’m 72 and learnt “on the job”.

I started off by making a rough “storyboard” of each of the page spreads.

It quickly became apparent that Midjourney, at its current state of development, was absolutely hopeless at building a scene to specifications.

So I hit on the idea of treating each image like a movie set.

a) First, get the background setting right

b) Next, create the featured players and any props in the scene, isolated from any background — the “green screen” principle

c) Finally, assemble them to match the storyboard using image editing software; in this case, Photoshop.

BONUS!

Because it’s difficult (no, impossible!) to comprehend the amount of work which this project entailed, I have made a short video scrolling through ALL the images generated by my prompts to Midjourney. I’d say 90% of them are rubbish, and an alarming percentage of those seem positively psychotic. It’s a strange business. Pause anytime to see stills.
Music is “Holiday For Strings” by David Rose and his Orchestra. Enjoy.
